BAGO
Location
Capital of 15th Century Mon Kingdom of Hanthawaddy,
Bago sprouts with a lot of memorable sites of its own. It is
only 80 km by road from Yangon so it could well be made an
extension of a Yangon visit.
How to get there
Bago is a road and rail junction on
Yangon-Mandalay and Yangon-Mawlamyaing routes. It is 1 1/2
hours by car or 2 hours by train from Yangon.
Where to stay and dine
Bago has good guest houses but no
accommodation should be needed for a foreign tourist as it is
close to Yangon. For food there are several restaurants
including Shwe Ohndaw just outside the town. The Hanthawaddy
Restaurant lies under the golden shadows of thousand-years-old
great “Shwemawdaw” Pagoda, serving the best Thai, Chinese &
Myanmar cuisines.
How to go about
Limousine service at Yangon International Airport , free airport
transfer by major hotels, taxis easily available in town.
Why so special
The leading pagoda of Bago is Shwemawdaw ,
more or less the size and shape of the Shwedagon. Places of
interest also include :Lay-myat-nhar pagoda (Four-faced pagoda)
Shwe-tha-lyaung (Reclining Buddha) (55m long), Kalyani Sima
(Ordination Hall), 28m high Buddha Image of Kyaikpun Pagoda, and
the Palace of King Bayinnaung (being restored as Kambawzathadi
Palace)
KYAIKHTIYO
Kyaikhtiyo pagoda is located in the small town called Kyaikhto, in the Mon State. This destination is 160km away from
Yangon. The pagoda is 1100km above sea-level. It is a 11
kilometer uphill climb for the hikers from Kinpun base camp.
There is also a steep winding road for 4-wheel drive cars from
the base to the nearest point of the pagodas. The pagoda is also
known as "the golden rock". The meaning of Kyaik Hti Yo :
According to Mon tradition, the name is a corruption of
Kyaiki-thi-yo being derived as follows. In Mon language the word
"Kyaik" means " pagoda" and " yo" " to carry on the hermits
head", in Pali the word" ithi" means a hermit and therefore the
name means " the pagoda carried on the hermit's head.
TAUNGOO
Located 175 miles from Yangon and is the only place for the
tourists where you can get good accommodation on Yangon-Mandalay
road. Taungoo (Kaytumadi City) was founded by King Mingyinyo in
1510 AD and later innovated by King Minye Kyawhtin. All the
four sides of the city wall are still very conspicuously seen,
with the exception of the part of the southern wall. The wall is
built of bricks. The moat surrounding the city is dried up,
except in some of its sections on the eastern side, where it is
purposely kept and properly maintained. About 6.4 m from the
wall city is the first moat filled with soft mud, which is about
9.6 m wide. It is one of the main gateways to Bago Yoma and its
teak forests and is worth exploring. It derives much of its
importance these days from the timber trade and the teak forests
on which its economy depends visibly seen on the mountain ranges
lying to the east and west of the town beckon visitor. Even its
ancient empire has long since crumbled; Taungoo remains an
important pilgrimage site for Buddhist devotees who flock
regularly to Shwesandaw pagoda.
